Here is a quick test of a background that will be used in the animated short we are going to enter in the Teletoon Pilot Project.

I painted this entirely in Photoshop, roughly based off a sketch that Jon did. There is still much work to be done, but I really wanted to test it out so far.

Also, there are 4 different layers going on here to give it a very subtle 3D effect.

PLUS! here are a few storyboard panels of what will come after we truck in to the windshield and cross dissolve to the characters inside the car.

Sorry about the blurriness....when I put on the flash it creates a glare so I had to turn it off which results in product like that of above and below...:(

So I've been doing a wee bit of painting since I last posted as well. The two at the top are acrylics and the bottom one...the super creepy one :) is a digital painting. What I love most about painting is that going into it I usually tend to have no pre-conception of what I'm going to create, then by the end of it when I come out of the trance and analyze what I've done It's like I'm looking at it for the first time and I get to try and figure out what it means.

I'm really quite amateur with painting yet. I'm only self taught and use acrylics because they're safe and easy. I've yet to try oils and have only experimented with watercolours, both of which I am itching to learn. I am pretty stoked on how far I've gotten with digital painting though, since that first day in 2007 when I just started school and was embarassed that I was the only person in my class who had never even heard of Photoshop, much less ever used it. As for my next self lesson...ILLUSTRATOR! weehaaaaawwwwr!

As my first post of the new year I am pleased to say that it is to do with an actual JOB! I'm illustrating for a kids book which tickles me pink in so many ways.

I've been really wanting this and I put the message out to the universe when I wrote down all my New Years resolutions on paper. I've never jumped on the resolution boat before but I really needed some personal improvements. I won't post the extensive list for you here but I will say that if you truly "believe" good things can happen, they will! Which is actually what this book is about:)

I have to admit, I haven't drawn anything in a ridiculously long time. The reasons being many things, but ultimately it's lazyness. Shame on me! When I tried to do some doodling I found my skills had regressed almost a year! I was getting frustrated but I had to remember a quote from my hero John K...something about everyone having stiff periods but you have to 'be a man' and draw your way through the stiff periods, then draw some more....draw until you don't get any sleep at night and you dream about drawing. That's our tax for being gifted.

Right now, I'm not overly impressed with my drawings, but I thought I would share them anyways, since usually I am my own worst critic and it's also nice to see peoples crappy drawings sometimes too.

This one I actually like. It's a bit of a tribute to one of my all time favourite artists, obviously, DR.SEUSS. There are also Disney and JohnK influences in there. More heavily form JohnK as he is the source for pretty much all my principals, then I borrowed some styles from the BG's in Disney's 'Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land'.

It's a work in progress. Hope you enjoy!!

Some of these, Margaret in particular, turned out muddy and pooey, but I still like them so I'll probably redraw them.

I want to do a kids book, but I need help writing it since I've never written one before. I have fragments of ideas and random characters but nothing solid. I really need to just focus, but I'm not too concerned, I have the tendancy to be hit by an idea that I love and pull something huge out of my but in one shot. Stressful as that may be, it seems to work.

I just got a new sketchbook :) Below is what I decorated inside the cover with using markers and pencil crayons.....Then I realized that I've never really used any of the filters in photoshop and it would probably look pretty sweet on this one. There is so many to choose from, but I think I like the one in the middle the most.

I just drew this booger guy up in less than an hour. I really like the manilla paper. I wish I had a sketchbook of it but I can't find a manilla sketchbook anywhere! I think I did see one once but in order to afford it I would have had to learn to count cards and go for a weekend trip to vegas.

This one actually has neon pink nipples but for some reason my scanner wouldn't pick it up.

I plan on having a show in the fall. This took me about 10 hours all together, including the collage of phone book pages under the paint(and countless minutes of gapping out..lol). It's on a 30x40 canvas.

I really enjoy Life Drawing Workshop. I have the freedom to use the poses for anything I want and I'm encouraged to experiment with new mediums. I really like the combination of gouache and water colour I used today. I think it's important to remember that I am a cartoonist above all and now that I have a solid understanding of anatomy to use it to benefit my cartoons. This is a concept that I didn't realize in earlier life drawing classes and it made things difficult for me.

* an interesting fact: I put in the sound myself as well and I was having technical difficulties with it at the very end so thats a poor quality voice clip of Jon saying "run" instead of the original clown's voice...hahah. And when I showed it in class I hadn't put that in yet so he just said it live in class and no one even noticed *kmmmpht*

V is For Vegetable

Jon and I made this last year for the 48 hour film challenge. We practically no experience with the camera and absolutely no experience with video editing program yet and really only spent like 12 hours or so hours on this thing..haha....half of which was spent googling manuals for the hardware and software. My goodness was it ever fun!!

I think Jon and I make a great directing team! And boy can Jon act!! I would liek to have been in there somewhere but I'm the camera gal. That's more than alright though, I LOVE the camera!

We didn't end up entering this year unfortunately....I was hit with the plague and couldn't help other than brainstorm. Jon had the equipment all ready to go and actors, but it just didnt fly this time around. That ok though,...we'll get something filmed on our own time anyways!

....like we did with this video below...unfortunately youtube is a bunch of fascists and took out the sound because of some stupid new law about using copyright music. Luckily you can still tell whats going on without sound (are we animators or what?!)

These are some of my first attempts with guache. I'm really stoked on them!!

Each of the pieces took 30 minutes. I did them in my Life Drawing class. I wanted to make class a little more interesting this week because for some reason I wasn't really in the mood (which is rare), so I decided to try a new medium. The school has a few small tubes of limited colors buried in the bottom of the very small art supplies drawer and I dug them out and used them all class. At this rate I think the school is going to need to purchase some more paint!

What do you guys think?

ps. I hate guns but the model was holding one so I tried to incorperate it.

It is gorgeous springtime in the Okanagan and it is far too easy to procrastinate on doing homework by getting lured out into the sun and doodling. I wish I had a laptop, then I could get the best of both worlds. Oh well, I'm always able to find logic where I need it; the more I draw (even if I'm supposed to be doing homework) the better I get and the more valuable I become as a potential employee! Plus..I would like to sell fine art as well eventually when I have a collection... and the big pieces usually come from a good doodle, so ya, it's not procrastination at all! lol.

I put an outfit I actually own on the long girl. I just wish I was a s tall and slim...and that my hair was still long :( Every time I cut it I always say I will never do that again...then I let it grow so long that I'm dying for a change. Then I give in and cut it and wind up traumatized because it has been so long since the last cut. What a strange cycle :P My sister is going to give me a rad haircut though and put blue and/or purple peek-a-boo's in it! I'm so excited...the last time I had a cool color in my hair was like 4 years ago,...and it was hot pink!

I admit, I don't know who Clara Bow is, I assume she's an actress. I stumbled across a picture of her whilst I was looking up vintage clothing online, which led to old pictures of actresses and pin-ups, etc...and though she was super cute and would be fun to doodle.

As for the dogs, well, I'm trying to get into a canine frame of mind as my animation short that I am working on right now (which I will show you later) is based on a dog in his daydream. I just need to get more organized before I put up posts on my animation.

I coloured mine with markers though, he uses guache, which I have never used, but I am going to learn as soon as I can.

Encouragement from a Hero

... You start drawing with your brain, but aim to draw from the heart. That doesn't happen instantly. You have to first absorb the knowledge slowly and then forget about it and let your pencil be guided by your subconscious. Not easy, and it hurts to go through the stiff period. A lot of lesser men give up during the stiff beginnings of learning something new and that's a dirty shame. Take the pain and shame like a man and get over it. You'll be so happy when your new knowledge becomes second nature. Otherwise you will be stuck, a slave to formula for life and unhappy, maybe even without knowing why. That pain and shame is essential to your progress. Embrace it. Kick the walls if you have to. But get back to the drawing board and force that stiff information into your head. Then lay awake nights obsessing over it. That's your tax for being gifted.

DFY has finished recording their EP and the way we are doing album art is everyone gets to color as many blank sleeves as they want, however they want.

This drawing here is one that I did for a lady that Josh worked with. Saturday was her last day and he wanted to give her a CD with original artwork by me because she was kind and gave me a nice necklace and gave Josh a cool book.

I colored this with markers. It turned out pretty cool and it didn't really take too long. If anyone out there wants me to do any commission artwork (and put a decent amount of time and effort into it) PLEASE please contact me! I'm poor!! lol. But really, I want to do more art for people. War General Portrait

Hey guys,

I'm pretty excited about this one. It's my first ever entry to Dominance War. It's an annual competition held on this game art website http://www.gameartisans.org/dominancewar/index.htm

This one is a mini competition they do before the big one. We've been given 9 days to create a General Portrait.

I started kinda late. I started last night and I have until Monday midnight to finish. It's ok though, I'm just doing it for the practice.

ABOUT THE PICTURE:

I haven't got a name for her yet.

Her personality is strong, intelligent and compassionate. The time is sometime in the future, yet I wanted to keep a rustic, old portrait feel. I picture her residing in a cabin somewhere out in the arctic. She has learned to speak the native tongue out there and has learned lots of great survival skills from the natives.

She's a tough as nails woman who has been all over the world and gone through some crazy shit, yet on the inside she is a gentle soul who has compassion for every living creature and would never draw her sword unless it was called for(although I wouldn't test it, she has the tendancy to spontaneously go berserk).

The picture isn't done yet, there's lots to be done. I would love some suggestions, or comments or feedback.

This is my very first Z-Brush sculpt! This is actually a bit older of a version. I've added some alpha textures to it. The teeth are messed up cuz I didn't understand how to do layers yet, but they look kinda neet...like wood or something.

This was made from my own concept using z-spheres instead of a base-mesh from XSI....that will be coming soon!

I'm a dutch kid so this image really spoke to me (found it randomly on google). They look like mini-old people in the photograph, it's all in the eyes..and their poses too. I didn't really captue that in my doodle which is ok, i was more focused on cute. I think I could've improved the little boys pose with a more extreme line of action. I think I willl come back to this some time.

This one was drawn back in November or something, then I colored it on the first day I got my markers ( a few weeks ago). The drawing was quite an achievement for me. I did it in eight minutes without using pencil and I really captured his expression. The markers took longer, I'm not sure how long. It makes me laugh whenever I see it on my fridge.

I love Spumco style. My biggest inspirations as lately have been Katie Rice, Kali Fontechio, John Kricfalusi, and Marlo Meekins. I realized I don't very often just draw someone elses characters for practice so lately I'm trying to do that a lot more. Here's a doodle page with some Spumco characters (yellow) and a few of my own (green) in which I was imitating Spumco style with a bit of my own incorperated.

So, I just came up with this guy in about 2 hours as an in class assignment. About an hour and a half of that was spent on just figuring out what I wanted my character to be. I've realized that it is really important to have some good reference and try out bunch of rough thumbnail sketches before you get into the task. It's also really important to keep in mind your freedom and creativity and how can you make this something you really want to draw. If you're not having fun your picture won't turn out. In fact I'm still conditioning the left side and right side of my brain to work together in harmony. That was really hard for me.

This time I wanted to show you guys the reference I used.

At first I was thinking about doing something like a Christmas "elemental" but after a few quick sketches I wasn't really liking anything......then I drifted over to the thought of a piano-type character, but after a few seconds of looking at pictures of piano's, I realized I wasn't really into that either. Then I thought of how much fun a retro T.V. would be to draw because of it's simple shape and fun colours! I was thinking about "War of the Worlds" when I made this character as well as how T.V can sometimes be a "monster" of distraction. Voila!

These gals are just some random doodles that I fell in love with. Now I'm planning in putting them on some business cards. The smaller girl would just need to be stretched horizontally a bit. I would have two different business card, both with the same info but different girls,...for variety. Also, if I will choose one article on each girl to be colored. I was thinking the bow on the smaller girl and the panties on the taller one....Actually now that i thnk of it, I think I would color the shirt on the smaller girl and the front stocking on the tall one. Effects Animation

My first water effects animation. It captured really light so hopefully you can see it ok. There is an unintentional horizon line shift at the end with the ripples but you might not have even noticed it if I hadn't said anything.

For this assignment we had a choice of making Timon a hitchhiker or get turned down for a date or fall down and elevator shaft without any dialogue. I went 5 seconds over our max. requirement (which is a lot in animation) but I still managed to get some really smooth animation in there.

I didn't finish it as nicely as I wanted however( the part when his foot gets run over). I kinda squished his pose in there and he should be placed a little farther to the right of the screen. Also I wanted to add ina few more in-betweens to his stagger. And not to mention I never got around to drawing his face. I still got an A though so I guess I can't complain too much.

Same thing going on with the colors.. I don't get it. It must have something to do with Adobe Illustrator. I never use that program but my teacher suggested we try it for this assignment.

Anyways, this was a strong pose I thought. I'm starting to loosen up.

WEll, for some weird reason the colors are all messed up...I just wanted to show you guys an improved version...at least you can see he's got a good silhouette. Hopefully I can get one with his colors to work.

I ended up using more of a salmon color than the boring red to give him more of a retro look.

a quick concept for the hero I've created for my Character Design class. He has a radioactive beard that has a personality of it's own (hence the high5). I'm still trying out different colors but I think I've narrowed down his body/facial structure to what I want.

So here's my final 2d assignment. By far my favourite! The only problem is....I ran out of paper!! and as some of you already know, that shit's expensive! So right now it's just KEYS. However a friend of mine was kind enough to give me his animation paper. Now I just need to find the time amongst other assignments to finish it :P
